Sometimes the hardest part is showing up and getting the motivation to chase your dreams.
Part of the difficulty is to overcome the fear of going after your dreams. We fear of failing, of letting others down, or even fear of success. Those fears might come to fruition. We could let ourselves down, but we won’t know this until we try. We can not predict the future and as amazing it would be to do that, the only thing we can do is move forward for ourselves.
I’ve heard this before and I’m not taking credit but it stuck with me, the way to overcome fear is action. By taking the action, most of that fear slips away, instead of focusing on the fear, we are focusing on the task at hand which is carrying us to our dream.
Don’t let your dreams slip through your fingers because you were afraid to show up. Be brave, grab hold of those dreams, and don’t let go.
My top 5 tips to help you show up:
- Schedule it – Sometimes if the task or plan isn’t scheduled, it doesn’t get done. Better to put it on the calendar to make some time and rearrange it if needed later.
- Look at it every day – In addition to the above, give yourself a reminder so that you’ll see it every day. That way you won’t forget. Put it in the bathroom, the kitchen, the wall of your bed room or office. Schedule a reoccurring reminder on your phone. Slap that reminder in a place where it’s in your face. Be sure that you are able to see it at least once a day.
- Reward yourself – Trick yourself into rewarding yourself once you sit down to do the work. Eat your favorite snack or drink once you start the work. Maybe once you finish, promise yourself you’ll get to see that TV show or movie you always wanted. I’ve always preferred positive reinforcement to motivate myself and it might work for you too! Of course you could do negative reinforcement but that doesn’t work for me.
- Find accountability – If someone is waiting on you, it’s much easier to get motivated and harder to forget . Maybe they have a project they want to work on too so you both and work on it together! Support and encouragement is a great way to get you to show up.
- Track your progress – Watching your progress grow is a great way to encourage you to keep going. Once you see that the little that you do each day is actually helping you meet your goal, not only does it ignite your motivations but you are improving your skills and gaining experience. You should be proud at your progress, no matter how little or small they might look.
