Publish and Thrive by Sarra Cannon Review

Have you seen Sarra Cannon’s Publish and Thrive course but haven’t been able to decide if you want to sign up yet? Hopefully my honest review will help you make a decision!

I have to admit, I was a bit nervous about signing up for Sarra’s Publish and Thrive course. Mostly because I’m skeptical by nature and I had already seen a lot of people advertising other courses during that time and it cost quite a bit that I couldn’t justify paying for it at the time.

I had seen Sarra launch and advertise the first round of the Publish and Thrive course but I didn’t jump on it. I thought about it but ultimately I decided to wait until I saw reviews. After taking the course, I wish I jumped on it. lol I’m not saying it just to get you to buy, I really think that now but keep reading to see why. lol For reference, I joined the August 2020 round. A year after she launched.

If you enjoy Sarra Cannon’s Heart Breathings YouTube Channel videos, you’ll likely enjoy her course as they are a similar format. A mix of her talking to the camera and screensharing her templates while walking us through them. I’ve watched her HB channel for awhile and appreciated the information she shared so I thought that the Publish and Thrive course would be similar. I was right. 🙂

I’ve taken a few other online courses, mostly general entrepreneur or business courses but they were not focused solely on self publishing or indie publishing which is what I had been searching for. I always intended on self publishing and maybe later becoming a hybrid author in the future so it was difficult to find a good, successful author to learn from.

Sarra is professional and courteous during the live Q&As, similar to her chats on her YouTube channel. Those were probably my favorite parts of the course because we could ask any questions related to the modules that has not already been asked in previous live Q&As. I think those alone are worth it! It’s like having a personal mentor as she provides substantial responses to each question.

Sarra does an amazing job getting through all the asked questions in the allotted 2 hours. She’s also good about following up afterwards if needed. I just wish that we had more time to digest the information and ask questions but we do get LIFETIME access and we can ask questions in the next round she runs.

I’ve been researching self publishing for years. Of course, experience is the best teacher and Sarra has that experience. lol I thought I knew a lot when it came to self publishing but I still learned a lot from the Publish and Thrive course.

Benefits

  • Life time access – You can go through the course as many times as you’d like as it is a one time purchase.
  • Course updates – As Sarra learns or the self publishing world changes, she’s been constantly updating the course to better improve it for future students. She also solicits feedback to see what she could improve on or what we’d find useful. I think this is huge because other courses I’ve taken have been a one time and done. No guarantees of future updates as it takes time to update courses.
  • Templates and Downloadables – Sarra shares with us what she uses which helps saves us on experience and time. I haven’t used them yet but I can see myself using them once I am published.
  • Community – The Publish and Thrive alumni have a Facebook community group. They are more active during the rounds but I’ve seen people post throughout the year. From what I’ve seen, everyone has been kind and helpful. It’s not as active as I thought it would be but it makes sense as people have busy lives. Might be a drawback if you don’t use Facebook as that is the only platform for the community.

Drawbacks

  • Cost – I admit, I’m a frugal person by nature so it hurt a little to spend that much money but ultimately, it’s one of my better online purchases. I think this course is well worth it for the value you get and the amount of time Sarra puts into it.
  • Live Q&A timing – As mentioned above, I don’t think we get enough time to digest the information before the Q&A to ask questions but we do get lifetime access and you can ask your questions during a later round.
  • Advertising – Sarra explicitly states she doesn’t really use advertising including Facebook or Amazon ads so be aware you won’t find in depth topics about that.
  • International publishing – Sarra is based in the USA so if you are an international author, this course may not be what you’re looking for if you’re looking to publish in your country.

Overall thoughts

The course is time intensive as you have to watch the videos but I’m one of those types who can watch videos at double the speed (2x) or more sometimes depending how quickly a person talks so I was able to get through the material quickly during the rounds. I still plan on retaking the courses at a slower pace so I can better absorb the information.

Modules 2, 3, and 4 are focused on the publishing and business side which I found the most useful for my current stage. I still found good nuggets of information in Modules 1 and 5. I appreciated Module 1 because it made me think of how I want to imagine and strategize my author career.

I’ve been extremely slow getting out my first book. I don’t know how effective the education I’ve gained from the course yet because I haven’t published a book yet. However, I do know that after taking the Publish and Thrive course, it helped me identify my next steps after I finish my book. It has helped me strategize and plan my future author career. I was just focused on finishing my book so I didn’t even consider that. If you’ve been following me, you’ve seen my book progress but now I’m thinking beyond my one book once it’s published.

Overall, I highly recommend taking this course if you’re a beginner to intermediate author looking to self publish. If you have general questions comment below and I’ll do my best to answer!

Let me know if you sign up! I’m always looking for new writing/author friends to connect with! Especially if we write in similar genres!
