I find myself too caught up with the race that is life. Keep forgetting that it’s a marathon, not a sprint. I’ve been unnecessarily stressing myself out so that I don’t take the time to sit and be present in life. I’m busy decompressing from the day once I get home and am working on this problem.
As you know I’ve been busy with revisions for my YA Fantasy debut novel but I got stuck in the past few weeks. My brain turned to mush and I couldn’t think of what to do next. All I knew is that it still needed tons of work. So I decided to take a week off. Like, shut off the revision part of my brain then started to read and do other things that I wanted. Then do you know what? I started to get inspired and ideas started to flow once again. My creativity just needed some time to refill the empty well and now I feel rejuvenated and ready to start tackling revisions again!
So here’s my advice when you start feeling burnt out or unmotivated to work on any project:
- Take those vacations – I know not everyone is fortunate or able to do this but I’m sure I’m not the only one that looks forward to vacations. I always am grateful whenever I get them. Whether they are staycations or off to a new or unknown place to me.
- Take mini-breaks – Don’t take those little snippets of time for granted. We should remember to take little mini breaks or vacations to rest. A day here, a few hours there. Just take what you can, step back and be present in life. Before we know it, we’ll be retired wondering what happened and what did we do for the last 20 or 30 years.
- Do what makes you happy and fulfilled daily – Sometimes we get so immersed in our projects that we put off our other interests. For me, while I love my stories, I also love creating art or playing with watercolors. For you, it might be spending more time with family or friends. Don’t let life pass you by without doing at least one thing you love everyday. Life is too short for that.
These are practices that I’m trying to do more in my daily life and I find that I am feeling more energized. Not so wound up tight like a ball of stress. It helps me remember to not take things so seriously. That I don’t want to be at the end of my life and have huge regrets. I want a life I’ll be able to remember fondly, meanwhile helping others have a better life too.
What do you guys do to rest and recharge? Either daily or after a huge project?
